can we eat chicken in dengue fever

Tara

I am really worried about my aunt. She got diagnosed with dengue fever last week, and she’s been having such a tough time. At first, it was just the high fever, and then she started with these crazy body aches and fatigue. Now, she says she’s feeling a bit better, but I remember how much she loves her food, especially chicken. Last night, she asked if she can eat chicken in dengue fever but I wasn’t sure how to respond, like, is it safe or not? I tried searching online, but there’s just so much conflicting stuff. Some people say having protein is important for recovery, but then I read somewhere that chicken might not be good? Can we eat chicken in dengue fever? What are the real risks? Also, should she avoid spicy foods too? She’s super tired and all she keeps wanting is her chicken soup, so now I feel bad if I tell her no. I just want to make sure she gets better, ya know? If chicken’s a no-go, what can she eat that would be helpful? I just need some clarity here because I feel lost trying to figure out how to support her through this messy time!

Doctors' responses

Eating chicken during dengue fever is generally safe and can be beneficial as part of a balanced diet. Protein, which chicken is a good source of, is essential for repairing tissues and maintaining overall health, especially during recovery. The most important thing is ensuring that her dietary options are well-cooked, nutritious, and gentle on the stomach. Chicken soup or boiled chicken are great options because they are easy to digest, provide necessary hydration, and can help with electrolyte balance. When it comes to spicy foods, it’s best for her to avoid them. Spicy dishes may irritate the gastrointestinal tract, which is already vulnerable during dengue, potentially causing discomfort or worsening nausea. During dengue recovery, hydrating effectively with plenty of fluids is critical – think water, coconut water, and herbal teas. Consuming fruits like papaya and citrus fruits can be beneficial due to their vitamin C and potential aid in platelet recovery. Encourage smaller, more frequent meals to help with appetite and digestion. Additionally, it’s crucial for her to monitor her symptoms closely, especially signs of severe dengue like persistent vomiting, bleeding, or abdominal pain. If any of these symptoms occur, it’s imperative to get medical help immediately, as severe dengue can be life-threatening without treatment. Remember, more fluids and rest will help her through the recovery journey, paired with a nutritious diet.
