is kava bad for you - #26176

Aditi

I am really confused about this whole kava thing. A few weeks ago, a friend told me how relaxing is kava and I thought maybe I should try it myself since I've been super stressed with work and personal stuff. First time I tried it, I felt kind of calm and a bit euphoric, which was nice but then I started reading about kava online. That’s when all these doubts hit me, like, is kava bad for you? I mean, I saw some posts saying it can cause liver damage and other health issues. But then there were other people saying it’s safe when taken in moderation. I’m not looking to get addicted or anything and honestly, I’m just after some stress relief. I don’t wanna end up sick. Also, I’ve been having some mild stomach issues lately, and idk if that’s connected, or if maybe all the kava is bad for me if I keep drinking it? Should I go see a doctor just in case or is that overreacting? Like, how do you know if kava is bad for you before it's too late? I just want to make sure I’m not doing anything to hurt myself. Would love to hear what you all think!

Doctors' responses

Kava, derived from the root of the Piper methysticum plant, has indeed sparked debate regarding its safety, particularly its effects on the liver. While kava is traditionally used for its calming effects, modern use has been linked in some cases to liver damage, sometimes severe. The exact mechanism isn’t fully understood, but it’s believed to stem from compounds in the plant called kavalactones, which may be metabolized in ways that some people’s livers can’t handle well. When consumed in moderation, many people use kava without issue, but it’s important to be cautious. If you have a history of liver conditions, you’re taking medications that heavily involve the liver, or consume alcohol regularly, you should avoid kava or at least consult with a healthcare professional before using it.

As for your stomach issues, it’s harder to directly link those to kava usage without more specifics, but it’s worth monitoring if you notice these issues worsen with kava consumption. Kava might not be well-tolerated by everyone’s digestive system. You mentioned being stressed, and turning to natural options like kava is understandable, but consider other stress-relief methods that might not carry the same risks—like mindfulness techniques, regular exercise, or talking to a mental health professional if stress is a persistent issue.

Given your concerns about potential health effects, and to establish whether the stomach issues might be connected, a visit to your doctor could provide clarity. They can offer personalized advice after considering any potential effects on your liver function or overall health profile. When thinking about substances like kava, it’s always safer to err on the side of caution and be informed about what you’re consuming, especially if you’re experiencing symptoms that concern you. So, while a bit of kava for stress relief likely won’t hurt if you’re otherwise healthy, do keep tabs on how your body responds and prioritize any warning signs it might be giving you.
