which doctor to consult for uti - #27128

Ishita

I am really confused about which doctor to consult for UTI. A few weeks ago, I started feeling this burning sensation when urinating, and it got worse. At first, I thought it was just something that'd pass, but then, OMG, the frequency increased, and I felt like I was sprinting to the bathroom every few mins! I finally went to my regular doc, and they did some tests and told me I have a UTI. I got a prescription for antibiotics, and while it helped a lot, I still feel something's off. Now I’m kinda wondering if I should see a specialist, but which doctor to consult for UTI really? Should it be a urologist or maybe a gynecologist? I mean, I read some stuff that says it could be related to other health issues too, but really, I don't know where to go next. Do I wait it out, or should I see someone else? Just really stressing about which doctor to consult for UTI, because I don't want this to keep happening, you know? Any advice would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

If you’re dealing with a UTI, starting with a visit to your primary care physician (PCP) is usually a sensible first step. They can diagnose and treat most simple UTIs effectively. Since you’ve already been prescribed antibiotics and symptoms are lingering, it might be wise to consider seeing a specialist, depending on your circumstances and healthcare history. If you’ve experienced recurring UTIs or if the infections are not fully resolving even with treatment, a consultation with a urologist could be valuable. Urologists specialize in the urinary tract system and can perform more detailed evaluations to determine if there are underlying issues, like a structural abnormality or chronic condition, contributing to frequent infections. A gynecologist might be another option, especially if you suspect the symptoms could be linked to any reproductive health issues or if you’re experiencing unusual symptoms. They can assess how your urinary health might intersect with other aspects of your reproductive system. It’s also crucial to consider lifestyle factors and overall hygiene practices, as these can play a role in frequent UTIs — ensure you’re drinking plenty of water, maintain good personal hygiene, and discuss any recent changes or behaviors with your healthcare provider. In situations where symptoms persist despite treatment, or if you’re experiencing severe pain, fever, or other concerning signs, don’t hesitate to seek medical attention promptly, as it might indicate a more serious infection or condition.
