Based on your description, it sounds like your mum may be dealing with sciatica, which is often caused by a herniated disc or other conditions that press on the spinal nerves. This type of pain often begins in the back and radiates down one leg. It’s important to confirm this diagnosis with a healthcare professional. Start by ensuring she avoids activities that noticeably worsen the pain, like standing for extended periods or lifting heavy objects. Encouraging brief periods of lying down or sitting with good posture can be beneficial. Over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen may help reduce inflammation and pain, but it’s wise to consult a doctor before she begins any new medication, especially if she has other health conditions or is on any regular medications. Engage her in gentle stretching exercises specifically targeting the lower back and hamstrings, as these might help relieve tension on the sciatic nerve. If the leg pain persists, increases in intensity, or if she experiences symptoms like numbness, weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control—those are red flags needing immediate medical attention. Implementing heat or cold therapy, like applying a cold pack or heat pad to the affected area, can sometimes provide temporary relief, although you should monitor her response to see which helps more effectively. Ensure that any self-care activities performed are safe based on her specific health profile. Finally, it would be prudent to schedule an appointment with her primary care physician so they can evaluate her symptoms in person, potentially recommend imaging studies like an MRI, and tailor a treatment plan which could include physical therapy or other prescribed interventions.
