Doctors’ responses

Severe weakness in the context of controlled diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, and anxiety can stem from various interrelated factors. Peripheral neuropathy might be contributing to the sensation of weakness and shivering. It’s crucial to ensure your neuropathy is managed effectively, as uncontrolled symptoms might exacerbate the feeling of weakness. Consider speaking with your healthcare provider about optimizing treatment for neuropathy, possibly with medications like pregabalin or gabapentin. If anxiety is compounding your feelings of weakness, exploring strategies to manage this aspect more comprehensively could help. Cognitive-behavioral therapy or discussing medication options with your doctor could be beneficial. Additionally, despite taking a multivitamin, you might still need specific nutrients in higher amounts. It would be worthwhile to check for deficiencies, particularly vitamin B12 and vitamin D, since these can impact energy levels and nerve health. Your age and dietary habits might require more targeted supplementation or dietitian’s advice. Since you are retired, incorporating regular yet light physical activity, like walking or gentle yoga, could enhance your strength over time, further helping with anxiety by boosting endorphins naturally. It’s also imperative to rule out other medical conditions that can cause weakness, such as thyroid dysfunction or anemia, so if symptoms persist, a comprehensive blood test might help. Make sure to discuss all current medications with your doctor to check for potential interactions or side effects that could be contributing to your symptoms. If any red flags like chest pain, shortness of breath, or rapid worsening of symptoms appear, seek medical care promptly.
