If your periods have been absent for three months, it’s important first to address potential causes. One of the first steps is to rule out pregnancy if that is a possibility, so starting with a home pregnancy test is a good idea. Keep in mind that stress, significant weight changes (gain or loss), excessive exercise, or hefty lifestyle changes can also impact your menstrual cycle. Certain medications can also cause menstrual irregularities, so reviewing any new or current medications with your healthcare provider is useful. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), ovarian insufficiency, thyroid disorders, or other hormonal imbalances might also play a role, and sometimes investigating these conditions requires a couple of lab tests or an ultrasound, so seeing a doctor would be beneficial. At your appointment, you can discuss the types of screenings that might be appropriate for you, given your symptoms and medical history. Try to track any other symptoms you’ve experienced over the last few months, as they can be helpful in making a diagnosis. Engaging in healthy lifestyle habits, such as eating a balanced diet, managing stress, and maintaining regular, moderate exercise, is beneficial for overall hormonal balance, but it’s not a guaranteed fix if there’s an underlying medical issue. In some cases, hormone therapy may be needed to resume regular cycles or address deficiencies, this should be guided by your healthcare professional based on the findings. If you’ve been taking any herbal supplements without noticing improvement, it’s a good idea to discuss these too, as they may sometimes interact with other treatments. Don’t hesitate to reach out, as delayed or irregular periods can lead to bigger health issues if left unresolved.
