applying milk on face overnight - #14936

Fatima

I am really curious about applying milk on face overnight. I've read so many things about how it can be beneficial for the skin, but I'm not sure if it's really worth it. A couple of weeks ago, I started noticing my skin looking really dull and dry, especially after the long winter we've had. Ugh. So I thought maybe I should try something natural, like applying milk on face overnight. I've done it a few times and it feels nice at first, but then it gets kinda sticky, you know? I wake up in the morning and my face feels a bit different but I can't tell if it’s actually improving anything. Has anyone else tried applying milk on face overnight? Did you see any difference in your skin? I’m worried I might be wasting my time or could even make things worse! Also, I've seen some people say it can lead to breakouts? Is that a common thing with applying milk on face overnight? Any tips for, like, how to do it properly or if I should mix it with something else? Thanks for any advice, guys!

Doctors’ responses

Using milk on your face overnight is an idea steeped in traditional skincare. Milk contains lactic acid, a type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), which can help exfoliate the skin and might improve texture and tone to some extent. However, while it might provide some moisturizing benefits, applying it overnight can be tricky for a few reasons. Firstly, leaving any product on your skin that isn’t designed for overnight use can potentially block pores, leading to acne or irritation, especially if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin. The sticky feeling you mentioned is common due to the natural sugars in milk, and it might lead to discomfort and unwanted residue on your pillows.

If you want to explore milk’s benefits, a more practical approach might be to use it as a short-term mask instead. You can apply cold milk to your face using a cotton ball, leave it on for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse it off with warm water. This method allows you to enjoy the exfoliating and moisturizing properties without the potential drawbacks of overnight application. Make sure to follow with a moisturizer suitable for your skin type to lock in hydration.

Regarding mixing it with other ingredients, it’s generally best to keep it simple. Adding other components without understanding their interactions can sometimes cause irritation or reduce effectiveness. If you’re exploring natural skincare, consider consulting with a dermatologist or a licensed esthetician, especially if you notice any adverse reactions or don’t see the desired improvements. They can give tailored advice based on your specific skin needs.
