side effects of drinking milk with lemon - #16974

Reyansh

I am trying to understand the side effects of drinking milk with lemon 'cause I've been feeling kinda weird after I had it the other day. My friend swears by this combo for health benefits, and I thought I’d give it a go. But after downing that glass, I ended up with a bit of an upset stomach, and honestly, it was really uncomfortable! Now I'm doubting if I should've mixed them in the first place. I read that the side effects of drinking milk with lemon could include nausea and maybe some digestive issues, but I didn’t really think much of it at that moment. Does anyone else get stomach cramps after having this mix? I don't know if I’m just sensitive to it, or if it's that classic “don't mix dairy with acidity” thing? My buddy insists he’s fine, which makes me wonder if the side effects of drinking milk with lemon vary from person to person? The other thing is, I don’t wanna keep suffering for no reason! Should I just avoid it altogether? Man, I wish I knew more 'bout this before trying it!

Doctors’ responses

Drinking milk with lemon can indeed cause some people to experience stomach discomfort, and it sounds like you’ve experienced this firsthand. The combination of milk and lemon can result in the milk curdling. This occurs because the acidic nature of lemon juice can cause the proteins in milk to coagulate or clump together. This process resembles what happens when making cheese where a coagulant is introduced to milk to separate it into curds and whey. When this happens in your stomach, it can lead to symptoms like upset stomach, nausea, or cramps, which seems to align with your experience. While your friend might not have any issues, individual tolerance to foods can vary widely based on unique digestive systems and other factors like stomach acidity or existing digestive conditions.

If you noticed that mixing milk and lemon causes discomfort more than once, it might be best to avoid the combination in the future. While both milk and lemon have their own individual health benefits—milk is rich in calcium and vitamin D, and lemon is high in vitamin C—the combination doesn’t necessarily offer any additional health advantages and could lead to unnecessary gastrointestinal distress. Also, if digestive symptoms persist or worsen, it might be a good idea to see a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying issues. In the meantime, sticking to either milk or lemon separately might save you from further discomfort. Remember, everyone’s body responds differently, so it’s important to listen to what yours is telling you in cases like this.
