how to cleanse liver naturally - #21757

Ranveer

I am really desperate for some advice on how to cleanse liver naturally. Last month, after a particularly heavy weekend, I started to feel this weird heaviness in my right side and I googled it and everything pointed to liver issues. I've never had any serious health problems before, but I also know that my diet has been less than great—lots of takeout and maybe too many cocktails. Anyway, I went to the doc, they did some blood tests and said my liver functions are a little off, nothing major but they suggested I look into how to cleanse liver naturally. I've been trying to eat more greens and drink water but honestly, I'm feeling lost. Do certain foods really help? And what about detox drinks or teas? I'll be honest, I kinda freaked out when they mentioned liver enzymes. Like, what does that even mean?! Should I be avoiding alcohol completely? I've read mixed things about fasting too. Kinda scared of this ‘liver cleanse’ idea but also really worried. If anyone has tried how to cleanse liver naturally and actually saw results, please share your experiences or tips. My whole family has a history of liver problems, and I really want to do this right. Thanks in advance!

Doctors' responses

To address your concern, it’s good you’re already focusing on diet and hydration—these are important starting points for liver health. A “liver cleanse” doesn’t have a lot of scientific backing as the liver itself is excellent at detoxifying; rather, the aim should be supporting its natural functions. Following an evidence-based approach, increasing your intake of antioxidants through foods rich in vitamins C and E can benefit. This includes fruit like berries and citrus, and vegetables such as leafy greens, broccoli, and peppers. Coffee, interestingly enough, has been shown to possibly improve liver health, so you may not need to cut that out. It’s generally advisable to limit or avoid alcohol especially if liver enzyme levels are off, as this gives your liver a chance to recover. As for detox drinks or teas, many lack substantial evidence for effectiveness, and some might even be harmful; it’s crucial to approach these with caution. Fasting doesn’t really offer any proven liver benefits either and can sometimes be more stress than helpful. A balanced diet and maintaining a healthy weight are really more important so prioritize whole, unprocessed foods. Be wary of supplements claiming to “cleanse” the liver without scientific support. It’s also essential to monitor liver function with your doctor regularly, addressing any changes in symptoms promptly. And while lifestyle modifications are beneficial, do them in conjunction with medical advice, not as a replacement. Family history of liver issues can be a risk factor, making it even more crucial to manage potential contributors like obesity and alcohol intake. If symptoms worsen or persist, following up with your healthcare provider is necessary as they can guide you best based on their understanding of your individual case.
