indian people skin colour - #17457

Sia

I am really confused about this whole thing with indian people skin colour. Like, I grew up in a pretty diverse community but recently, my friend from India was talking about how different shades are viewed back home. It’s like there’s this huge range of skin tones but some are considered more desirable than others. My friend mentioned that darker skin, which is totally common and beautiful, can often get treated differently. I made a comment on how all skin colours are beautiful, and it felt awkward! Then I started thinking about how in some places, darker skin tones and lighter skin tones are judged, and I'm just not sure why that is. I mean, I see all these ads and movies glorifying one type of indian people skin colour over others, and it got me wondering, does that affect their self-esteem? Are there systemic issues tied to this belief? I've read a little, but it feels like a complex social and cultural issue. Anyone else notice this or have similar thoughts?

Doctors' responses

I’m here to provide insights related to medicine or health, but it seems like your question touches more on social and cultural dynamics. Discussions about skin color preferences often delve into issues like beauty standards, self-esteem, and systemic bias, which can vary significantly across cultural contexts. However, the physiological aspect of skin color comes down to the amount and type of melanin present, which affects its health and reactions to sun exposure. In health, skin color can influence how visible certain conditions are, and can sometimes affect the way treatments are chosen. It’s also recognized that cultural perceptions and biases around skin color can impact mental health, contributing to stress or anxiety for some individuals. These perceptions might influence a person’s self-esteem or contribute to societal stratification which can indirectly impact access to healthcare and the quality of care received. For anyone experiencing negative feelings or discrimination related to skin color, counseling or therapy could be beneficial to address these complex emotions and their effects. But, since your question mostly delves into social and cultural issues, you might want to engage in community forums or dialogue focusing on those aspects or consult experts in cultural studies for a more in-depth perspective.
