onion on hair side effects - #19382

Aisha

I am kind of freaking out here, so I started using onion on hair because I read it helps with hair growth and lots of people swore by it. I chopped up some onions and made this juice, applied it all over my scalp, and left it on for like 30 mins. At first, it seemed fine, but after washing it out, my scalp felt super itchy. I didn’t think much about it, but now I'm noticing some redness and maybe a bit of swelling too? Could this be a side effect of the onion on hair? Like, I thought it was supposed to promote growth, not make my scalp all irritated. I mean, am I allergic or something? I’ve got fine hair and always been careful about what I put on my skin. Has anyone else had onion on hair side effects that were like this? How do you even know if you can use it without reacting badly? I don’t want to ruin my hair, but also, I don’t want to stop. Should I keep using it or just quit while I’m ahead? I really want my hair to grow, but now I'm super worried about these onion on hair side effects. Help!

Using onion juice on the scalp is a common home remedy that many people believe can boost hair growth, largely because it contains sulfur compounds thought to provide some of the building blocks for hair. However, onion juice can irritate the skin, especially the sensitive skin of the scalp. From what you’re describing, it sounds like you might be experiencing a contact dermatitis, which is inflammation of the skin due to direct contact with an irritant. The itchiness, redness, and swelling are certainly indicators. While true allergic reactions to onion are rare, they can occur, and skin can also become sensitized to an irritant over time. Before making any decisions, first thing you should do is stop using the onion juice immediately to prevent further irritation. It’s also a good idea to try a gentle cleansing of your scalp with a mild, fragrance-free shampoo to remove any lingering onion residues. For the symptoms, applying aloe vera gel or a cool compress may help soothe the skin. If the redness and swelling worsen or if new symptoms develop, you should definitely see a healthcare professional to rule out any serious allergic reactions. While natural remedies have their place, they can come with unexpected side effects, and it’s important to approach them with caution. Testing new products or substances on a small patch of skin before full application can help identify potential irritations early on. Before continuing with the onion treatment or trying other remedies, it might be beneficial to consult with a dermatologist to explore safe and effective ways to encourage hair growth without compromising your scalp health.
