menstrual cup hurts to put in - #19840

Aryan

I am trying to figure out why my menstrual cup hurts to put in because it’s supposed to be easier, right? I mean, I’ve watched all the videos and read the reviews. I started using one last month after hearing how great they are for the environment, and honestly, I was really excited. But then when I tried to insert it, OMG it hurt so much! I really thought I was doing everything right, like folding it properly and even using some water-based lube to help out. But still, it just kinda jolts me and feels super uncomfortable! I even thought maybe I had the wrong size or something, I just ordered a second one thinking it would be better. Some advice would really help because I don’t want to give up on the whole menstrual cup thing, but this whole ‘menstrual cup hurts to put in’ is getting frustrating. I'm wondering if different brands are actually shaped differently? Maybe it’s just the type I chose? Or is there a technique that I might be missing? Any suggestions would be super appreciated! Thanks!

Menstrual cups can be a tricky thing to get just right, especially early on. There are several reasons why you might find it uncomfortable putting it in. First, sizing and shape matter more than you might think. Not every brand fits every person the same; menstrual cups can vary in length, width, and firmness. It’s possible that the model you have isn’t the best fit for your cervical position or pelvic floor tone. If the cup feels too firm, it might create too much pressure against your vaginal walls, making it painful. While a water-based lubricant can make insertion smoother, excessive friction or tension might mean you’re not relaxed enough. When you’re tense, it can be harder for the muscles down there to accommodate the cup. It might help to experiment with different insertion techniques too. In addition to the commonly used C-fold, you could try folding it into a punch-down or origami fold, as these might be less bulky to insert. It’s crucial to ensure that it’s not hitting the cervix, which can be sensitive, so you might also want to check the position of your cervix during your cycle, in case you need a shorter cup. And about brands—yes, they differ. If the size seems correct but it still feels wrong, exploring softer cups or those specifically designed to be shorter or more flexible might reduce the discomfort. Lastly, if you still experience pain after trying these suggestions, it might be useful to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying issues like vaginismus or anatomical variations, which could also cause insertion difficulties.
