can we apply clear gel overnight - #21246

Drishti

I am really confused about this whole clear gel thing. I have this patch of really dry skin on my elbow that seems to flake all the time, and my friend recommended this clear gel that she swears by. She said can we apply clear gel overnight, and I thought, huh, maybe? My skin does feel super rough sometimes, and I've tried a few creams, but they didn't really help. I'm worried about using it overnight though—like, what if it clogs my pores or makes it worse? Also, can we apply clear gel overnight even if the skin is irritated? I read somewhere that it’s good for moisture, but I'm not sure if my skin will just freak out. Like, is it too thick, or won’t it absorb well? I saw a review online where someone said they used it and had some issues, but others love it! Can we apply clear gel overnight safely or ask a doc? Should I test it first with a small amount before going all in? I just wanna get rid of this dryness already!

Doctors' responses

Applying a clear gel overnight can be a useful part of managing dry or flaky skin, especially on areas like elbows. Many clear gels are hydrating—often containing water-based ingredients that help in replenishing lost moisture. Before you commit to leaving it on overnight, a patch test is wise to ensure your skin tolerates the product well. Apply a small amount to a less visible area, and leave it for a few hours to see if there’s any irritation or adverse reaction.

If the clear gel is a hyaluronic acid gel or similar, it’s generally designed to draw moisture into the skin effectively. However, in some cases, especially if the skin is already irritated or compromised, certain formulations could exacerbate irritation or dryness. If your skin is very sensitive, you might find more benefit from creams or ointments that are specifically designed for sensitive or irritated skin, which often contain calming ingredients like aloe vera or ceramides.

That said, if it’s just dry and flaking without signs of severe irritation like redness or burning, it’s likely fine to use overnight. Monitor how your skin feels and reacts. Additionally, consider your overall skin care routine—exfoliating gently a couple of times a week and following it with moisturizer might improve your skin’s texture. If the dryness is persistent, or if you’re noticing other concerning changes, consulting with a dermatologist could provide more targeted solutions. They can recommend products or treatment approaches based on a thorough understanding of your skin type and any underlying issues.
