side effects of face waxing - #21601

Kiaan

I am super confused and kinda worried about the side effects of face waxing. Just the other day, I decided to try waxing my upper lip and a little on my cheeks, because I've seen so many people rave about it for smooth skin. My friend did it, and her skin looked amazing, but when I tried it, wow, it was like a whole different story! Afterward, my skin became red and irritated, like bright red, and it was super sensitive to the touch. I didn’t expect those kinda side effects of face waxing at all! Also, I've had these weird tiny bumps pop up where I waxed, which makes me think maybe my skin didn't like it? And I read online that sometimes people can have allergic reactions or breakouts after. Is that normal? I mean, do all people deal with these side effects of face waxing, or am I just really unlucky? What should I be looking for as signs of a bad reaction? Do I need to do anything specific to help my skin recover from these side effects of face waxing? I feel like I need advice before I consider trying it again, I'm just stressing about it!

Doctors' responses

Redness and irritation after face waxing are actually quite common, particularly for people with sensitive skin. Waxing removes hair from the root, which can cause trauma to the skin’s surface, resulting in redness, swelling, and tenderness in the area. Small bumps, sometimes referred to as folliculitis, can also develop post-waxing; it’s an inflammation of the hair follicles often caused by bacteria entering the open follicles. These responses are generally temporary, usually resolving within a day or two. However, allergic reactions or more significant breakouts could indicate a sensitivity to the wax itself or an issue with skin care products used before or after waxing.

To help your skin recover, avoid touching the area excessively and keep it clean to prevent any infection. Apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream or aloe vera gel to soothe the inflammation. Cold compresses can also reduce redness and swelling. Refrain from using any harsh skincare products, like exfoliants or alcohol-based toners, until your skin calms down. Moreover, avoid sun exposure as the skin may be more prone to damage post-waxing; use a gentle sunscreen if needed.

It’s worth about considering doing a patch test with the wax on a small skin area next time before fully committing to a facial waxing session, as it can help identify any adverse reactions beforehand. If you experience any severe reactions or if the symptoms persist beyond a few days, seeing a dermatologist would be advisable. They might provide further insight and may even recommend alternative hair removal methods suitable for sensitive skin, like threading or using gentle hair removal creams. Before trying waxing again, ensure your skin routine is suitable for your skin type especially if you have particular sensitivities.
