what is liver inflammation - #21672

Aditi

I am really confused about this whole thing with liver inflammation. A couple of weeks ago, I started experiencing these strange symptoms like fatigue and some itching that I thought was just dry skin. Then, I went to my doctor and they did some blood tests. The results showed elevated liver enzymes, and that's when they mentioned the term "liver inflammation." I asked what is liver inflammation, and they kinda just said it's when the liver gets swollen or irritated. But like, what does that even mean? I mean, is it serious? What causes this liver inflammation? Do I need to change my diet or lifestyle? They said it could be due to things like alcohol, fatty liver, or even viral infections, but I don't drink much and I thought my diet was fine. I don't understand why this is happening now! How will I know if the liver inflammation is getting worse? Are there specific warning signs I should watch for? And how do I get cured or manage this — like, do I have to take medicine for liver inflammation? Just need to know what I should be doing, because this all feels really overwhelming and confusing.

Doctors' responses

Liver inflammation, known medically as hepatitis, occurs when the liver tissue becomes irritated, leading to swelling. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including infections like hepatitis viruses, excessive alcohol consumption, certain medications, or metabolic issues such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Even if you don’t drink much alcohol or feel your diet is healthy, conditions like NAFLD can occur due to factors like obesity, diabetes, or high cholesterol. To figure out what’s causing your liver inflammation, you’ll likely need further testing or evaluations, such as imaging studies or tests for viral infections. If your doctor suspects a specific cause, they’ll tailor tests to confirm that. Monitoring symptoms is crucial; fatigue is common, as you’ve noticed, but watch for worsening symptoms like jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes), dark urine, or severe abdominal pain — these can signify more serious liver damage. In terms of management, lifestyle modifications are often key. Adopting a balanced diet low in saturated fats, sugars, and processed foods helps, as does regular physical activity to maintain a healthy weight. Avoid alcohol entirely to prevent further liver stress, and check with your doctor before taking any medications, including over-the-counter ones. Whether you’ll need medication to manage liver inflammation depends on the underlying cause; for example, antiviral drugs are necessary for viral hepatitis. Keep in continuous follow-up with your healthcare provider to monitor liver function and adjust your management plan as needed. They’ll also decide if consultations with a gastroenterologist or hepatologist are necessary.
