is testosterone increase height - #23298

Aadhya

I am 16 and worried about my height. I’ve always been on the shorter side compared to my friends, and it's kinda bumming me out, honestly. My dad is pretty tall, and I thought maybe I’d inherit that gene, but not so far. I read some stuff online that says testosterone can affect height but I’m not too sure about all that. I went to my doctor last week, and he mentioned my testosterone levels are normal for my age, but I feel like maybe I need a boost or something? Like, is testosterone increase height? I mean, would taking supplements help me grow taller? I don’t wanna mess with my body too much, but it’s just been frustrating. I’ve heard some rumors from friends about how athletes or bodybuilders do it to get taller, but I’m not really wanting to turn to that. Wouldn't that just be risky? Can naturally increasing testosterone levels through exercises or diet help with my height? Or is it just a myth that is testosterone increase height? I really wanna know if there are legit ways to tackle this!

Testosterone does play a role in growth and development during puberty, including height, but it’s important to understand the way it works. During puberty, testosterone contributes to the growth spurts typical of this period alongside growth hormone and other factors. It helps in bone elongation and increase in muscle mass, which is why it might seem like there’s a connection between testosterone and height. However, artificially increasing testosterone levels in someone who already has normal levels typically does not contribute to increased height and can lead to other serious health risks. Your bones’ growth plates, where lengthening occurs, gradually close as you move through puberty and into adulthood; testosterone too high too early can accelerate the closing of these growth plates, potentially stunting growth rather than enhancing it. As you’ve mentioned, messing with your hormone levels can be risky, particularly with supplements or therapies not supervised by a healthcare provider. Athletes and bodybuilders who use steroids or testosterone boosters might aim for muscle growth rather than height, and such practices often come with significant side effects including liver damage, mood changes, and more. As for natural methods, maintaining a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, getting regular, adequate sleep, and engaging in weight-bearing exercises are known general good practices for supporting healthy growth. Connecting with your doctor for monitoring your growth progression over time is a wise move. They can offer personalized advice and ensure there are no underlying health issues affecting your growth. It’s critical to avoid self-administering testosterone or related supplements, as the risks often outweigh any potential health benefits.
