does serum damage hair - #23650

Dhruv

I am really confused about this whole serum situation for my hair. Like, I used to love this specific hair serum that everyone raves about, but I feel like since I started using it, my hair’s been more brittle and frizzy, if that makes sense? Sometimes I wonder, does serum damage hair or is it just a coincidence? I read online about some ingredients in serums that can be harsh, and now I'm like second-guessing everything. Last week, I started noticing split ends, and honestly, my hair was doing great before that. Could some serums have chemicals that contribute to issues? My friend says it might be the serum, but I’m not sure. Would I be better off using natural oils instead or is that another myth? And why is it that some people seem to have the perfect hair even with serums, while mine feels damaged? I don’t wanna just toss it if I can salvage my hair, ya know? Does serum damage hair in just certain circumstances or what? What should I be looking out for? I’m really hoping there’s a way to fix this without throwing everything away. Thanks for any help!

Hair serums can indeed be a bit tricky—while they’re generally designed to add shine, reduce frizz, and protect hair, some formulations may not work well for everyone. It’s possible that the specific ingredients in the serum you’re using could be contributing to your hair becoming brittle and frizzy. Ingredients like certain silicones can coat the hair too heavily if used in excess, weighing it down or potentially causing buildup over time. This buildup can prevent moisture penetration, leaving hair dry and prone to breakage. It’s also worth considering whether there’s alcohol present in the serum, as it can be drying if used frequently. Split ends and an overall increase in brittleness can indeed result from products not suiting your hair type. Switching to natural oils like argan or coconut oil could be beneficial; they are lighter, less likely to cause buildup, and help nourish the hair shaft. To avoid further damage, look for products labeled as sulfate or paraben-free and aim for non-drying ingredients. Additionally, ensure your shampoo and conditioner are adequate for your hair type, as they might also be contributing to the condition of your hair. If you’re noticing ongoing issues, giving your hair a break from the serum to see if there’s any improvement can be helpful too. Consider using a deep conditioning treatment once a week to help restore lost moisture. Ultimately, if you continue to have concerns about your hair’s health or conditions like excessive shedding, a consultation with a dermatologist or a trichologist could provide more personalized guidance based on your individual hair needs.
