what is the side effect of masturbation - #24178

Janvi

I am really confused and a bit worried about something that’s been on my mind lately. Like, I’ve been hearing a lot about this topic, but I’m not sure what is the side effect of masturbation? I mean, I sometimes feel like I might be doing it too often, but then there's all this stuff online saying it's normal, you know? I started noticing some strange things, like sometimes I feel really fatigued after, and other times, my focus just goes out the window. I even read somewhere that it messes with your mood or gives you anxiety? Is that true? And, like, what is the side effect of masturbation in the long-term, especially if you’re doing it daily? At my last doctor's visit, I mentioned it kinda casually, and the doc shrugged it off, which didn’t really help clear my head. But I keep thinking, what if I’m pushing it too far? I don’t know, maybe I just need some clarity on what is the side effect of masturbation for someone my age. Can it really lead to any serious health concerns or changes in my daily life? I just want to make sure I’m not harming myself ya know? Please share your thoughts!

Doctors' responses

When it comes to masturbation, the general medical consensus is that it’s a normal, natural activity with few side effects. Most people do not experience major adverse health impacts from it. In fact, it’s considered a safe way to explore sexuality, relieve tension, and even promote relaxation. It’s important to note that achieving a balance is key; if you’re worried about doing it too frequently, it’s useful to consider if it’s interfering with your daily responsibilities or social life. Fatigue or lack of focus afterward are not directly linked to the act itself but might relate to the timing—such as late at night when you’re already tired—or to underlying stressors or anxieties that you may need to address. While some people report temporary mood changes post-masturbation, there’s no solid evidence directly linking masturbation with chronic mood disorders like anxiety or depression. These conditions often have more complex roots. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, it might be worthwhile to explore other lifestyle factors like nutrition, sleep, and stress management. Long-term, regular masturbation doesn’t generally lead to negative health outcomes. Nonetheless, if you feel it’s interfering with your daily life, or if it’s tied to feelings of guilt or anxiety, speaking with a mental health professional might help. Remember, it doesn’t cause physiological damage, but your emotional and psychological response to it might need exploration. As always, if any ongoing unexplained symptoms linger or affect your quality of life, a more detailed discussion with your healthcare professional could provide further insight tailored to your unique situation.
