can i drink amla juice in empty stomach - #24299

Amara

I am really confused about this whole thing with amla juice. I've been hearing a lot about how healthy it is, especially for digestion, but I'm not sure what to believe. Last week I decided to try it out because my stomach has been feeling a little off lately. Like, I’ve been getting these random cramps and sometimes my digestion feels really heavy. I read somewhere that drinking amla juice can help, but here’s the thing — can I drink amla juice in empty stomach? I tried it one morning and it felt refreshing but then I got a bit nauseous and I wonder if it was the empty stomach thing? Then, later that day, I had a horrible heartburn. Like, is that normal?? Like, can I drink amla juice in empty stomach without worrying about that? I don’t wanna mess up my gut more than I already have. I want to get the benefits, not the negatives, ya know? The internet is full of opinions and I’m just looking for something clear. Can I drink amla juice in empty stomach? Should I maybe mix it with something or wait after breakfast or what? Would love to get your thoughts on this and if you've experienced something similar! Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Drinking amla juice on an empty stomach does have its merits, but it can also come with certain side effects like the nausea and heartburn you mentioned. Amla, or Indian gooseberry, is known for its high vitamin C content and antioxidant properties, which can indeed contribute to improved digestion and overall health. However, for some individuals, consuming it on an empty stomach might be too acidic, which can lead to irritation of the stomach lining and cause symptoms like yours. Your experience of nausea and heartburn could be an indicator that the acidity from the juice is affecting you negatively when not buffered by food.

It’s often best to start with smaller amounts to see how it impacts your body, especially if you’re new to it. You could try diluting the juice with water, effectively reducing its potency, and see if this helps make it more tolerable. Additionally, consuming amla juice after eating a light meal or snack might alleviate some of the potential for irritation. This way, your stomach isn’t too sensitive when it gets hit by the acidity.

If your stomach problems persist or worsen, though, it’s important to consider other potential causes for your digestive discomfort. If symptoms like heartburn or cramps continue, reach out to a healthcare provider to explore if there could be an underlying issue beyond dietary changes that needs addressing. And just remember, while amla juice can be a great supplement for your health, listening to how your body responds is crucial. It’s worth experimenting a bit, and perhaps combining it with other components of your diet in a way that suits your individual digestive needs.
