why am i losing weight with hypothyroidism

Anvi

I am really confused, like, why am I losing weight with hypothyroidism? For the last couple of months, I've noticed I've been dropping pounds pretty fast. I mean, at first, I thought it was just me stressing out or maybe my diet, but honestly, I haven't done anything too crazy. I've had hypothyroidism for a few years now and usually, I struggle to lose weight, so this is totally opposite of what I expected. My energy levels are kind of low sometimes, and I'm definitely feeling the fatigue, but the scale keeps going down. I did see my doctor last week, and my TSH levels were still high, but she said my overall thyroid hormone levels were kinda stable. It’s just weird, ya know? Like, why am I losing weight with hypothyroidism when most people gain? It's been messing with my mind a bit. Have any of you experienced this or have insights? Should I be worried about this weight loss or is it something to just monitor? Ugh, so many questions and I'm kinda at a loss here!

Unexpected weight loss in the context of hypothyroidism is not typical, as weight gain is commonly associated with an underactive thyroid. Several potential explanations might account for this concerning weight change, some of which might warrant further investigation by your healthcare provider. Firstly, consider lifestyle factors like diet, physical activity, and stress, but it sounds like these haven’t changed significantly for you. Medically, one possibility is that there’s another underlying condition affecting your metabolism, such as hyperthyroidism despite stable thyroid hormones on the surface. It could also be an absorption issue related to medications, dietary intake, or gastrointestinal problems causing malabsorption of nutrients. Your unchanged or high TSH level might indicate that your thyroid medication needs adjustment, or there may be an error in the medication dosage, which is affecting your metabolism in unexpected ways. Although some individuals experience a paradoxical weight loss, this can signal other problems like diabetes, adrenal dysfunction, infections or malignancies, which are worth ruling out. Since unexplained weight loss can be a red-flag symptom, it’s crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. Be sure to discuss your symptoms in detail, the persistence of fatigue, and any other changes that arise. A comprehensive evaluation with lab tests and possibly imaging might be necessary to pinpoint the cause. Continuing to track your weight, energy levels, and any new symptoms until your next appointment can provide useful information. Remember that sudden or unexplained weight change is significant, especially with hypothyroidism, and it’s worth ensuring that an appropriate assessment is completed soon.
