which doctor to consult for foreskin problem

Mira

I am really struggling with some issues related to my foreskin and I don’t know which doctor to consult for foreskin problem. It started a few months ago when I noticed some discomfort, and then it got worse! I’ve tried keeping the area clean and dry but that didn’t help much. There’s some swelling and it feels kinda sensitive, like I can’t wear certain clothes without feeling pain. I was honestly embarrassed to even mention it to my regular doctor, but now I’m regretting not asking sooner. This morning, I found some weird patches and I’m kinda freaking out about it. I mean, is this something a urologist can help me with? Or do I need to see a dermatologist? I read online that some foreskin problems can be serious, not that I think mine is, but I wanna be sure and not just ignore it. Which doctor should I actually consult for foreskin problem? Has anyone dealt with this before? I just need advice on how to get a proper diagnosis or what tests might be needed... like, do I need to worry about anything more than just moisture or irritation? Feeling kinda lost here!

Doctors' responses

You should definitely consult with a urologist regarding your foreskin issues. Urologists specialize in the urinary tract and male reproductive organs, making them the most appropriate specialists to deal with foreskin problems. The symptoms you’re describing, such as discomfort, swelling, sensitivity, and unusual patches, are things a urologist is well-equipped to assess. They can perform a clinical examination and, if necessary, recommend tests to determine the underlying cause—whether it be infection, inflammation, or another condition like phimosis or balanitis. If they suspect that the issue might be dermatological, they can also coordinate care with a dermatologist, especially if there’s any skin condition involved. In the meantime, continue keeping the area clean and dry, but avoid using any harsh soaps or heavy creams which might exacerbate irritation. It’s important not to delay the appointment, especially since the symptoms have persisted and evolved over several months. The presence of patches can sometimes suggest an infection or a dermatological condition that needs appropriate treatment to prevent complications. Lastly, don’t worry about the embarrassment—urologists deal with these types of issues regularly, and their main aim is to ensure you get back to feeling comfortable and healthy.
