Masterbation

Ayaan

I am really confused about something that’s been bothering me for a while now. I've heard so many things about masturbation, like how it's supposedly completely normal, but sometimes I feel guilty about it. A year ago I dove into a pretty stressful work situation and turned to masturbation more frequently just to relieve stress. So, like, I went from maybe once a week to several times in a day sometimes! Now I'm wondering if that's normal. I get this tight feeling in my lower stomach after, and it worries me. Like, am I hurting myself? I read somewhere that excessive masturbation can lead to issues, but I honestly don’t know what “excessive” even means. My friend told me masturbation is just a natural part of being human, but then I hear all this conflicting advice out there! I even tried to cut back, thinking maybe I was becoming addicted or something but then it’s like I find myself sneaking off to do it when I'm alone. What do you all think? How do you know when masturbation becomes a problem? Is there a line between healthy habits and unhealthy ones? Help!!

Doctors' responses

Masturbation is indeed a natural and common activity that many people engage in for various reasons, such as stress relief, pleasure, or simply due to natural biological urges. The key concern isn’t necessarily about the frequency of masturbation itself, but how it affects your overall well-being and daily life. Feeling a tightness in your lower stomach could just be muscle tension or related to how you’re positioned during masturbation, but if it’s persistent or painful, it may be worth getting assessed by a healthcare professional to rule out any other health issues. In general, “excessive” masturbation is not strictly about a specific number but rather about whether it interferes significantly with your day-to-day activities, responsibilities, or relationships, or if it becomes a compulsive behavior you feel unable to control. If you feel guilty or ashamed surrounding your habits, that’s also an important aspect to consider, which could be influenced by personal beliefs or cultural perspectives.

It’s good that you’re also thinking about your habits and seeking a healthy balance. To manage your habits, start by recognizing if there are specific triggers related to stress or emotional factors, and consider exploring alternative stress-management strategies like exercising, engaging in hobbies or meditation. If you continue to find it difficult to control and it impacts your life negatively, it may be helpful to talk with a therapist or counselor who specializes in sexual health or addiction. They can provide insights and strategies to help manage this behavior better. Remember, it’s about moderation and ensuring that your sexual health habits align with your life in a positive way. If you’re ever uncertain about symptoms or effects on your health, consult a medical professional to get personalized advice based on your situation—they can help address both the physical sensations you’re experiencing and any concerns about frequency and compulsion.
