You’re very unlikely to have caused any lasting harm from what you describe. Taking around 40 tablets over 7 months is a low and intermittent exposure, and Metformin has a strong safety record—even when used long term in people with diabetes. Since your tests are normal, that’s already very reassuring.

There isn’t really a concept of “needing to recover” from metformin in this situation. Once you stop it, the drug clears from your body within a day or two, and its effects don’t linger in a harmful way. The main things we watch with longer or regular use are vitamin B12 levels and, rarely, digestive side effects or fatigue.

Your fatigue could be unrelated, but to be thorough you can check:

* Vitamin B12 * HbA1c (average sugar) * Kidney function (if not already done)

If these are normal, you can be confident there’s no damage. Going forward, it’s better not to use metformin for “anti-aging” without medical advice—evidence for that in healthy people is still limited and not strong enough to justify routine use.

Taking metformin when you don’t have diabetes might not immediately cause harm, but it’s important to understand why its use without a clear medical reason isn’t generally recommended. Metformin is primarily used to manage blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, and its effects on glucose metabolism have been well-studied in that population. However, using metformin without having diabetes or another specific condition can lead to unintended consequences. For someone without diabetes, taking metformin over a long period could potentially lead to some issues like vitamin B12 deficiency, gastrointestinal disturbances, or lactic acidosis, although the latter is very rare. Extended use of metformin without a medical indication might result in slight alterations in the way your body processes glucose and insulin over time, but generally it doesn’t cause any permanent damage if you stop taking it. Stopping metformin should reverse most minor side effects, provided you’re not experiencing more severe complications. It’s crucial to have follow-up with your healthcare provider to ensure no hidden problems arise and to verify that any symptoms you might experience are unrelated to previous metformin use. If there are any new or worsening symptoms, you should contact your doctor for evaluation. For anyone considering taking a drug like metformin without a diagnosis that warrants it, discussing potential risks and benefits with a healthcare provider is key to make sure they’re making safe choices regarding medication.
