In cases of suspected Cushing’s syndrome, it’s typical to experience elevated heart rates. This is largely due to the effects excess cortisol can have on cardiovascular health. Cortisol, when produced in excess, can lead to increased blood pressure and changes in heart rhythm, so elevated heart rates during physical activity aren’t uncommon. Since the cardiologist has already assessed your heart and found it healthy, it’s reasonable to focus on other aspects. Your endocrinologist will likely want to measure cortisol levels to confirm the diagnosis, so be prepared for possible tests like blood samples, a 24-hour urine collection, or a low-dose dexamethasone suppression test. If Cushing’s syndrome is confirmed, treatment often involves pinpointing the source of the excess cortisol. It could be due to an adrenal or pituitary gland tumor, which can be confirmed through imaging studies, or it might be responsive to specific medications that the endocrinologist could recommend. Keep in mind that managing cortisol levels and addressing its root causes can help reduce symptoms like high heart rates, so getting a confirmed diagnosis is a positive first step toward proper treatment. In terms of preparation, make sure to note any new symptoms, medication usage, and family history you might have, as these details can be useful during the examination. It’s also worth discussing lifestyle factors with your doctor, such as diet and exercise, as these can affect both cortisol levels and cardiovascular health. Be sure to follow up on any suggested referrals or additional tests to fully address the Cushing’s if diagnosed. This comprehensive approach will help in finding an appropriate course of action and facilitate relevant treatment options.
