Doctors' responses

The likelihood of mild symptoms being due to lactic acidosis in someone who is apparently healthy, with normal kidney and liver function tests, and a history of taking metformin for several months is actually very low. Lactic acidosis is a rare but serious condition that’s more common in individuals with underlying conditions like significant kidney impairment, liver disease, or congestive heart failure. Metformin-associated lactic acidosis typically occurs in situations where there is a buildup of lactic acid in the body, but this is much less likely if you have normal organ function and no major chronic illnesses.

If you have mild symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, or muscle aches, these could potentially be side effects from metformin, but they aren’t typically indicative of lactic acidosis unless accompanied by severe and rapid onset symptoms. Common red-flag symptoms for lactic acidosis include severe weakness, difficulty breathing, dizziness, or stupor. In practical terms, unless you’re experiencing these more concerning symptoms, it’s probable the cause lies elsewhere.

Since routine blood tests didn’t include lactate or pH levels, evaluating persistent or worsening symptoms with your healthcare provider might be a reasonable next step. They can perform additional assessments if they have clinical concerns. Meanwhile, maintain your healthy lifestyle and monitor any new or changing symptoms. If sudden or severe symptoms develop, seeking prompt medical evaluation is crucial. In sum, while the chances of lactic acidosis are minimal in your scenario, staying informed and proactive with your health is always beneficial.
