Doctors' responses

Taking metformin without a prescription is risky, and you should only use it under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Metformin is primarily prescribed for managing diabetes and works by lowering blood sugar levels—but it’s not something one should self-prescribe, especially if you don’t have diabetes. Over a period of seven months, using 40 tablets, your exposure is relatively low if it’s approximately one tablet per week, but it’s important to understand the potential consequences.

Common side effects of metformin include gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea or diarrhea, and these can be more pronounced when taken on an empty stomach or if tablets are crushed, as it alters the way they’re absorbed and processed in the body. Crushing tablets is particularly discouraged unless specified, as it can lead to unpredictable blood levels of the drug. Metformin’s impact on kidney and liver function is a primary concern, although if tests indicate normal function, that’s reassuring. Continue monitoring with regular follow-up blood tests—this ensures early detection of any adverse effects.

Your mention of B12 deficiency is notable because chronic use of metformin can contribute to this. It’s advisable to have your B12 levels monitored and consider supplementation if necessary. If sleepless nights and feelings of being weak are concerning you, especially with your mental health feeling precarious, it would be beneficial to address these symptoms holistically. Discuss your sleep issues and mood with a healthcare provider, who can advise on appropriate interventions, whether that’s sleep hygiene practices, counseling, or therapy.

Also, evaluating why you felt inclined to start taking metformin is crucial. If it’s related to weight or lifestyle concerns, there might be more suitable and less risky options available with guidance from a doctor or dietitian tailored to your needs. It’s important to reach out to a healthcare professional to discuss your concerns fully—they can help ensure you’re approaching your health in a safe and effective way.
