For someone dealing with PCOS, managing symptoms like rapid weight gain, acne, and irregular periods is crucial. The hormonal imbalance in PCOS often leads to insulin resistance, which can contribute to both weight gain and acne. First, addressing the insulin resistance is important. Consider adopting a balanced diet that is low in refined carbohydrates and sugars; this can help regulate insulin levels. Aim to include whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables in your diet. It’s also beneficial to engage in regular physical activity—something like brisk walking or cycling for at least 30 minutes a day—to improve insulin sensitivity and aid in weight management.

For the acne, over-the-counter remedies such as products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid may provide some relief. However, it’s often necessary to consult a dermatologist, as prescription medications like retinoids or oral contraceptives may be more effective. Speaking of oral contraceptives, they can also help regulate menstrual cycles by balancing hormones; this is something you might want to discuss with your healthcare provider. Herbal supplements like spearmint tea have also shown promise in reducing androgen levels, a common issue in PCOS. However, these are supplementary and should be used after consulting with a doctor.

Finally, regular follow-ups with a healthcare provider specializing in PCOS are essential for monitoring how well these interventions are working and making adjustments as necessary. Blood tests to check hormone levels and metabolic markers can guide these efforts. If weight gain continues despite these strategies, it might be worth meeting with a dietitian or endocrinologist. It’s important to tackle these symptoms comprehensively as they are interconnected.
