Doctors’ responses
Growth in height usually slows after adolescence, and by age 18, most people have reached their peak height due to the closure of growth plates, also known as epiphyseal plates, in long bones. A bone x-ray can determine if these growth plates are still open. If they are closed, further growth in height is unlikely. However, if they are open, albeit rare at your age, there might be some potential for growth. Before proceeding with a bone x-ray, consider if it’s necessary based on clinical indications or just for reassurance. When it comes to supplements, many marketed as growth enhancers have little scientific backing for increasing height after puberty. It’s best to focus on a balanced diet with adequate nutrition, which supports overall health rather than expecting significant height increases. Make sure your meals include a variety of nutrients - proteins, vitamins, minerals - that generally help maintain bone health and strength. Calcium, vitamin D, and adequate protein intake are particularly crucial for bone health. Keeping active with regular exercise, including weight-bearing activities, can also support physical development and health. If there’s significant concern about growth or development, consulting with an endocrinologist can provide more insights, especially if there’s a noted hormonal imbalance or deficiency that might be impacting your growth trajectory. Lastly, any considerations or decision of conducting diagnostic tests or taking supplements should ideally follow consultation with a healthcare professional to avoid unnecessary procedures or potential side effects.
