how to stop loose motion immediately - #16191

Janvi

I am really worried because I’ve been dealing with loose motion for the past couple of days, and it's getting out of hand. Like, I thought it was just a random stomach bug or something, but ugh, it’s like every time I think it’s getting better, I end up running to the restroom again. I tried drinking lots of water and eating bland food, but nothing seems to work! Just this morning, I was feeling a bit okay, then boom, loose motion hits again. I mean, I have a really busy schedule coming up, and I can’t afford to be like this. I found myself almost late to work yesterday because of it, not to mention the whole uncomfortable feeling all the time. Is there some quick fix? I’ve googled a bunch of stuff on how to stop loose motion immediately, but half of it sounds too good to be true or like it’s conflicting. Some people swear by certain medicines, while others say just let it run its course. Ugh, should I be looking for something specific? What do you all do when you need to know how to stop loose motion immediately? Any suggestions would be super helpful. Thanks!!

Doctors’ responses

When dealing with loose motion, or diarrhea, it’s crucial to first consider the underlying cause. Oftentimes, it’s related to a viral infection, dietary issues, or even stress, and while it’s quite tempting to search for a quick fix, addressing the root cause is important for effective management. To address the symptom immediately, over-the-counter antidiarrheal medications like loperamide can be affective for short-term relief, but they shouldn’t be used if you suspect a bacterial or parasitic infection, or if you have a high fever, as it could worsen the situation. Rehydration is key, so continue to drink plenty of fluids, but consider using oral rehydration solutions that replenish lost electrolytes. Also, introducing a probiotic supplement might aid in restoring the natural balance of your guts flora, especially if your microbiome has been disrupted. Although sticking to bland, easy-to-digest foods like rice, bananas, toast, and applesauce (known as the BRAT diet) might not have provided immediate relief, it’s still a practical dietary approach. Avoid fatty, spicy, or dairy-heavy foods, which can exacerbate your symptoms. If there’s no improvement or if you’re experiencing severe symptoms like persistent high fever, blood in stools, or dehydration signs such as dizziness and decreased urination, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare provider promptly. These could indicate a more serious condition that requires professional medical evaluation. Balancing your body’s response while ensuring underlying issues are addressed is paramount, and getting professional advice can be necessary to rule out any significant underlying pathology.
