can we eat rice in dengue - #17786

Vanya

I am really worried about my brother who just got diagnosed with dengue fever. He’s been feeling super weak, and he has this nasty fever, plus all those body aches, ugh, it’s awful to see him like that. The doctor told us to keep an eye on his diet to help him recover, and I heard someone mention “can we eat rice in dengue”? Now, I'm confused 'cause rice is like a staple food for us, but is it okay? I've read that carbs can help with energy, right? But then I saw some stuff saying that if you're dealing with dengue, you’ve gotta be careful with what you eat, or it could mess up your recovery? I just want to make sure we’re doing everything right, especially since he’s not eating much. He’s been mostly having soups and fruits, which is good, but if rice is safe, I think it could help him a lot since he used to eat it everyday. Should we just avoid rice completely during dengue or are there any safe ways to include it in his meals? I’m honestly scared about him getting worse and want to make sure I’m not messing up with what we feed him! What do you all think about rice in this situation?

Doctors' responses

Yes, rice can be safely included in the diet of someone recovering from dengue fever. It’s perfectly reasonable to consider incorporating rice into your brother’s meals as it is a gentle source of carbohydrates which can provide needed energy when someone is feeling weak and fatigued from the illness. Since dengue affects the body’s ability to maintain hydration and energy levels, maintaining an appropriate diet is important. Rice is generally easy to digest and unlikely to irritate the stomach, which makes it suitable for people dealing with this condition. However, be mindful of the preparation methods. It’s best to prepare rice in a way that is low in fat and easy on the digestive system. Steam or boiled rice is preferable without added oils or spices that might upset his stomach. Pairing the rice with other bland, nutritious foods such as boiled vegetables or lean proteins can also help provide a balanced nutritional intake. And yes, the soups and fruits he’s already consuming are great as they help keep him hydrated and supply essential vitamins and minerals. It’s crucial to stay away from overly greasy or processed foods during this time. Also, ensure he’s getting plenty of fluids especially water, herbal teas, or ORS (oral rehydration solution) to prevent dehydration, which is a significant concern with dengue. Keeping track of his platelet count and watching for warning signs like persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or any bleeding is critical during recovery. In case any serious symptoms arise, seek prompt medical attention. Balancing energy-rich foods like rice with adequate hydration and monitoring his condition closely will support his recovery process.
