How long does it take to recover from breathing issues after stopping metformin? - #29797
I can't breath fully after metformin. I used metformin without prescription 40 tablets over 7 months. Blood tests are normal. Stopped medicine after feeling unwell 3 weeks ago. Will i recover fully?

Hello
Metformin itself usually doesn’t cause lasting breathing problems once stopped, so 3 weeks is already longer than expected for simple drug-related side effects to settle. Most people would feel normal within a few days to 1–2 weeks after stopping.
However, the symptom “can’t breathe fully” needs attention. Rarely, metformin can be linked to Lactic Acidosis, but that typically causes severe illness (rapid breathing, weakness, vomiting) and abnormal blood tests—so if your tests are normal, that’s less likely.
More common possibilities are anxiety-related breathing pattern, gastritis/acid reflux causing chest discomfort, or an unrelated lung/heart issue.
You should not ignore this since it’s persisting—get a clinical check (oxygen levels, chest exam, possibly ECG or chest X-ray). The good part is that this is usually reversible, and most people do recover fully once the actual cause is identified and treated.
If you develop worsening breathlessness, chest pain, dizziness, or fainting, go to emergency care immediately.
