fever viral

Diya

I am freaking out a bit here. Last week, I started feeling really sluggish and then, bam, I got hit with this fever. It was like one moment I was fine and then I woke up at 2 am soaked in sweat. I've been having this fever, they said it’s viral, but honestly, I'm really anxious about what that means. My temp's been around 101°F – sometimes it dips, but then tonight it shot back up to 102°F! I called my doctor and she just told me to wait it out and drink fluids, but I’m trying to figure out if I should be worried or what I can do to fight this fever viral thing. I got tested for COVID a few days ago since I had a sore throat, and that came back negative, but doc wasn’t super confident it isn’t some kinda viral infection. I just can’t shake the feeling that this fever viral stuff could be something worse or if I should just ride it out. Has anyone else had a situation like this? How long do viral fevers usually last? Like, should I expect this to go away soon, or am I in for a wild ride here? I’m just kinda lost and feeling drained.

It sounds like you’re dealing with a viral fever, which, as you’re experiencing, can be pretty unsettling. Viral fevers are usually caused by infections from viruses like the flu or common cold, and these often don’t require antibiotics since those are only effective against bacteria. A temperature around 101-102°F is typical with viral infections, and it’s good you’ve already gotten tested for COVID-19 to rule out that possibility. Generally, viral fevers can last anywhere from a few days up to about 10 days, depending on the virus, and typically peak before gradually subsiding. Staying hydrated is essential as it helps your immune system function optimally and prevents complications like dehydration. Drinking plenty of fluids, getting adequate rest, and managing symptoms with over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help alleviate discomfort, but it’s crucial to use them according to instructions and avoid overuse. If you’re feeling anxious about the fever’s persistence or experiencing severe symptoms like difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, or uncontrollable vomiting, it’s wise to seek further medical evaluation. Keeping your living space well-ventilated and humidified can also assist in easing respiratory symptoms. It might seem like a lengthy process, but viral infections often resolve with time. Monitoring your symptoms and substantial improvements should guide whether your current approach is sufficient or adjustments are needed. If your fever persists or escalates beyond a week without significant improvement, a follow-up with your doctor may provide additional insight or reassurance.
