diet for dengue patients

Rohan

I am really worried about my sister, she just got diagnosed with dengue and is so weak now. The doctors said she needs to focus on a good diet for dengue patients, but honestly, I'm kinda lost about what that means. Like, what can she eat? I heard fluids are super important, but what about solid food? She’s not really eating much right now ‘cause she doesn’t feel like it. I’ve been trying to get her to drink coconut water and soup, but should it be more than that? Friend mentioned special fruits and stuff might help her recover faster but I don’t know what’s safe for her. We’ve also read that some foods might help with the platelet count, so I’m thinking maybe we should pay attention to that too. I’m just anxious because dengue can be serious and I really want to help her, ya know?? Is it true that a balanced diet for dengue patients can really boost recovery time? I've seen lists online but they seem kinda confusing and maybe contradicting. Should I ask a nutritionist too? Just feeling overwhelmed trying to figure out this whole diet for dengue patients business. Any advice or personal experiences would be sooo appreciated!

Doctors' responses

Managing nutrition for a dengue patient can be tricky but is crucial for supporting recovery and preventing complications. For dengue, maintaining hydration is indeed pivotal; encouraging your sister to consume plenty of fluids is the right move. In addition to coconut water and soup, she might benefit from oral rehydration solutions, fresh fruit juices (like orange or guava juice), or electrolyte drinks. These aren’t just about fluids, but they also help replenish electrolytes lost due to fever and sweating.

When it comes to solid food, it’s best to aim for easily digestible options since her appetite may be low and her digestion can be sensitive. Soft food like rice, toast, boiled potatoes, or soft-cooked vegetables might be easier for her to handle. Adding lean proteins, like boiled chicken or fish, can provide necessary support for her immune system. Fruits play an important role as well; papaya, kiwi, and apples are gentle on the stomach and provide vital vitamins. Papaya leaf extract has been noted by some studies for potentially helping in increasing platelet counts, although it’s crucial to consult with the treating physician before starting any such remedies.

While adequate nutrition is beneficial, it’s also true that dietary changes alone cannot directly expedite recovery from dengue. They supplement medical treatment by supporting overall strength and immune function. Keeping her away from greasy, spicy, or overly processed foods can prevent any extra burden on her system. You don’t have to rush to see a nutritionist unless dietary adjustments become complex or she has additional medical conditions that require specific dietary oversight. Always ensure to follow the guidance of her medical team, especially if symptoms escalate like severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or bleeding. They’re signs that call for urgent medical attention. Keep her environment calm and comfortable, allowing her to rest sufficiently. Remember, while nutrition helps, close monitoring by her healthcare provider ensures her safety through this recovery period.
