why are my periods late

Reet

I am feeling kinda worried because my periods are late and I don't know what to think. Like, I've always had a pretty regular cycle, but this month, nothing. I thought it might just be stress or maybe that extra weight I've put on, but then my friend was talking about how it could be hormonal or even thyroid issues. I can't help but wonder why are my periods late? I took a pregnancy test last week and it was negative, so that was a relief, but what other reasons could there be? I've been feeling more tired than usual and a bit moody, which is kinda unusual for me. Also, I’ve been experiencing some cramps that felt just like pre-period cramps, but no period, you know? I just can’t stop thinking about why are my periods late. Are there tests I should talk to my doctor about? Or should I just wait it out and see if they finally show up? I read online that sometimes it could be due to changes in routine or just life stress, but I am not sure what to believe. Anyone else ever dealt with this? Would love some insight on why are my periods late!

Doctors' responses

There are several reasons why your periods might be late and, given the negative pregnancy test, we can consider other factors. Stress is a common cause that can indeed disrupt your menstrual cycle, as can changes in weight, and lifestyle—both weight gain and loss can affect hormonal balance. Talking about hormones, conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid imbalances can also lead to irregular periods. The fact that you’re experiencing fatigue and moodiness could possibly relate to hormonal fluctuations, including thyroid issues, so testing your thyroid function could be worthwhile. It’s great you’re considering a visit to your doctor as they might suggest running tests like a thyroid function test, prolactin level check, or an ultrasound if there’s a suspicion of conditions like PCOS. Remember, certain medications, intense exercise, or even the approach of menopause can also cause changes in your cycle. If your period doesn’t arrive within another few weeks, it’s a good idea to follow up with your healthcare provider. Meanwhile, try to minimize stress and maintain a balanced diet. Take note of any additional symptoms you experience, as they can offer clues to your doctor. If there’s any sudden pain or unexpected symptoms arise, seek attention more urgently. Keep track of your cycle and symptoms for patterns or changes that you can discuss at your next visit.
