(Extensor tendon)(Flexor tendon - #22449

Md shahbaz khan

n the 13th of this month, my entire hand got caught in a machine up to just before the elbow. My whole hand swelled up. The swelling has now reduced up to just before the wrist, but the palm still feels very heavy. The fingers feel stiff. The last finger bends back when I try to straighten it, and I cannot bend the joint of my thumb.”

Doctors' responses

It sounds like you’ve experienced a traumatic injury to your hand and possibly have damaged the tendons, which are crucial for finger movement. The observation about your last finger bending back when you try to straighten it suggests possible injury to the extensor tendons, while the inability to bend your thumb joint might indicate issues with the flexor tendons. Swelling and stiffness are signs of inflammation or ongoing injury, and may mask underlying issues like tendon ruptures, fractures, or nerve damage—which can be further assessed by imaging tests such as X-rays or MRIs. It’s crucial to have this evaluated by a hand specialist or orthopedic doctor promptly, even if the swelling is reduced, to prevent permanent dysfunction. Depending on their assessment, they might suggest immobilization with a splint or even surgical repair if tendon damage is confirmed. In the meantime, make sure you immobilize the hand to prevent further injury, and keep it elevated to minimize additional swelling. Consider applying cold packs to the swollen area for short periods to help with discomfort. Avoid pain medications like ibuprofen immediately before seeing a doctor as they could complicate diagnosis. Prioritize seeking medical evaluation immediately especially since it’s implicated vital structures in your hand, delaying treatment could lead to long-term issues or loss of function.
