can we eat amla in fast - #22967

Riya

I am super confused about my fasting routine and what foods I can or can’t have. Like, I’ve heard a lot about the health benefits of amla, right? My friend swears by it and says it’s amazing for digestion and boosting immunity. I’ve been fasting for a few days now, trying to get my body back in shape, and I've been curious: can we eat amla in fast? I mean, amla is a fruit, but isn't it a bit sour? Does it break your fast or not? I really want to include it because I feel like it could help with my energy levels or something. Last week, I tried eating just veggies during my fasting window, and wow, the cravings were something else. What about juice or amla powder? Does that count? Or would it mess up my fast? I read differing opinions online, some say it's okay, but then others say it might trigger something in your metabolism? Ugh, I'm just really unsure and trying to do this right but also not go overboard. If there are any do's and don'ts regarding amla in fast, that’d be super helpful! Thanks

Eating amla (Indian gooseberry) while fasting largely depends on the type of fasting you are observing and your specific reasons for fasting. If you are doing a religious fast, the rules differ widely between various traditions, and it would be best to check what’s permissible in that specific context. However, in the case of intermittent fasting or health-based fasts aimed at weight control, energy balance, or metabolic health, the considerations might be different. Amla itself is low in calories and rich in nutrients such as vitamin C, which might indeed give a boost to your immunity and digestion. When consumed whole, either fresh or dried, amla is unlikely to significantly affect your fasting state, particularly if you’re following a fasting protocol that allows for minor calorie intake, like up to 50 calories during the fasting window. That being said, amla juice or amla powder may have different impacts. Juice could possibly contain more sugars or added calories that could break your fast, therefore whole fruit might be more suitable if you’re being cautious. Powdered amla often used in its dried form contained minor calorific content and if used sparingly, might be okay but it’s different from taking it fresh. And as for the powder, it often comes with added ingredients, so you would need to check for any sugars or additives. If your fasting routine includes a strict zero-calorie mandate, then consuming amla even in a small quantity might be best reserved for the eating window. Additionally, given that you’re interested in boosting energy, ensure that when you’re not fasting you’re having a balanced diet to support your goals. This includes good proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. As with any health practice, tailoring it to your specific needs and condition, maybe with professional guidance if needed, can help ensure that you’re doing what best supports your overall health and goals. If your approach to fasting is primarily oriented towards metabolic benefits, some experts suggest sticking to water, black coffee, or plain tea to avoid triggering insulin responses that might interfere with the autophagy and ketosis processes often sought in fasting. Consulting a healthcare provider may provide more personalized advice, especially if you have specific health conditions or goals.
