does sugarcane juice cause gas - #25037

Agastya

I am just wandering if anyone knows if sugarcane juice cause gas?? I mean, I was at this tropical juice bar last weekend and tried fresh sugarcane juice for the first time and it like blew my mind! But then after I drank it, I felt kinda bloated and uncomfortable, which made me wonder, does sugarcane juice cause gas??? I couldn’t tell if it was just me or if it’s a common thing. Like, I’ve heard that some juices can make you feel gassy, and I guess sugarcane juice has quite a bit of sugar, right? A friend mentioned that the fiber in it could also play a role. I don’t usually have issues with gas, but this was def different for me. A little background, I usually stick to water and smoothies, but this sugarcane juice felt refreshing!! Anyway, just trying to figure out if I should avoid it in the future or if the bloating was a one-time thing. Any thoughts on the question, does sugarcane juice cause gas, like, what’s the deal? Would love to hear other experiences! Thank you!

Doctors' responses

Sugarcane juice can indeed lead to bloating and gas in some people. This is primarily due to its sugar content, especially fructose. The digestive system of some individuals can have trouble fully breaking down fructose, leading to fermentation by gut bacteria, which releases gas. Additionally, sugarcane juice is unfiltered and retains some fibers, which can be difficult for the gut to process, further contributing to bloating. The high natural sugar content can also cause some people to experience spikes in blood sugar levels, which may indirectly lead to digestive discomfort for those with sensitive systems. It’s possible that your experience was just an isolated incident, but if you’ve noticed similar reactions with other sugary beverages or juices high in fructose, it might be worth being mindful of your intake. If the bloating and gas do persist, you could try consuming a smaller amount of juice next time, or see if taking it with food might alleviate the discomfort. It’s important to listen to your body and avoid it if you continue to feel uncomfortable, and consult your healthcare provider if you experience any severe symptoms. That said, occasional indulgence in sugarcane juice should be fine for most people, but moderation can help you avoid these unpleasant side effects. Overall, if you’re looking for that refreshing taste without the side effects, experimenting with different proportions or pairing it with foods that ease digestion might help.
