can a deviated septum cause sleep apnea

Ishaan

I am really struggling with sleep lately and I don't know what's going on. My friend was telling me about how a deviated septum could cause all these issues, which I didn’t think much about until I saw my doctor recently. For years, I’ve been snoring so loud that my partner literally sleeps in another room sometimes! 😩 I’ve been waking up feeling super tired and like, I can barely keep my eyes open while driving. Ugh, it’s frustrating. The other night, I actually stopped breathing for a few seconds while sleeping, and it freaked me out. I had a sleep study done and they mentioned that I might have sleep apnea. The thing is, I have this evident nose problem, like I can’t breathe through one side at all, and I’m starting to think — can a deviated septum cause sleep apnea? I mean, is there a connection between those two? Ever since I learned what a deviated septum is, I can’t help but wonder if that’s what's screwing me up. I really don't want to go through invasive tests or procedures if this is just something that can be fixed with an adjustment or, idk, maybe surgery? I mean, should I be looking at fixing my nose first or just dive into the sleep apnea thing itself? Would love some opinions from anyone who knows more about this!

Doctors' responses

A deviated septum can indeed contribute to sleep-disordered breathing, but its role in causing sleep apnea is a bit more complex. A deviated septum occurs when the nasal septum, the bone, and cartilage that divide the nasal cavity, is off-center or crooked, making breathing difficult and possibly worsening snoring. While it’s not usually a direct cause of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), it can exacerbate symptoms in people who are already predisposed to it. The tissue in the throat collapsing during sleep is really the main cause of OSA. So, while a deviated septum might not cause sleep apnea on its own, it certainly doesn’t help with nasal flow, pushing individuals more to mouth breathing, which can worsen things at night.

Considering your situation—loud snoring, exhaustion, and apnea episodes identified in a sleep study—it’s essential to address both issues. Start by discussing with an ENT specialist if surgery like a septoplasty is suitable, especially if you experience nasal blockage significantly impacting quality of life. You should address the sleep apnea simultaneously, which might include using devices like CPAP to keep airways open while you sleep. These can provide immediate relief more than structural adjustments would. Lifestyle tweaks can help, too: maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding alcohol close to bedtime, and sleeping on your side might improve symptoms. It’s good to be proactive, but with sleep apnea, take urgent steps to prevent potentially severe health complications like cardiovascular issues.

Ultimately, a combination of fixing nasal obstructions and treating sleep apnea is often necessary, so working closely with your healthcare providers to tackle both is your best course of action.
