is typhoid communicable - #28361

Reet

I am really worried because my cousin just came back from a trip overseas and told me he had typhoid while he was there. When he got home, he started feeling sick, with like a high fever and a really bad stomach ache. They did test, and the doctor confirmed it was typhoid. We were all kinda hanging out and sharing food and drinks at a family gathering right after he got back, and I can't stop thinking... is typhoid communicable? I mean, could I have caught it from him? There were kids around too and they were getting close to him and all. I read a little about it online but some places say it's really contagious, and then other sources say it mostly spreads through contaminated food or water. Plus, my little one had some of the same food as him, which makes me even more anxious. Ugh! I just don't want anyone else to get sick, you know? I can't help but feel like if it is communicable, then we're all at risk. What should I be watching for? And how do I keep everyone safe now? Is there anything I can do? What should I ask my doctor?!

Doctors' responses

Typhoid fever is indeed communicable, primarily through the ingestion of food or water that’s been contaminated with the feces of an infected person. The bacterium responsible for it, Salmonella Typhi, can survive in environments with inadequate sanitation and hygiene. Close contact with an infected individual can increase the risk of transmission, especially if personal hygiene practices, like handwashing after bathroom use, are not followed. Sharing food or drinks with someone who is infected could potentially spread the bacteria if they didn’t wash their hands well after using the toilet. Since you mentioned sharing food and drinks, there’s a risk that others may have been exposed, hence it’s important to monitor for symptoms such as high fever, abdominal pain, or gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea or constipation. These signs usually appear 1-3 weeks after exposure. If any symptoms develop, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare provider promptly they may recommend testing or a course of antibiotics depending on individual circumstances. As for preventive measures, ensure everyone in the household practises good hand hygiene, especially before eating and after using the bathroom. It’s also wise to be cautious with food handling, such as washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly and ensuring food is cooked thoroughly. In environments where typhoid is prevalent, using bottled or boiled water for drinking and cooking is recommended. For high-risk individuals or future travel to areas where typhoid is common, a vaccination might be considered after discussing with your doctor. When talking with your healthcare provider, inquire about the need for preventative antibiotics for close contacts, and discuss specific measures to minimize risk for vulnerable individuals, like young children, should be discussed. If someone gets sick, isolation might be necessary to prevent further transmission. Immediate medical attention is vital if severe symptoms like persistent vomiting, confusion, or a significant drop in blood pressure occur. Keeping everyone safe, keeping a close watch for any symptoms, and maintaining rigorous hygiene will be the main steps to avoid further spread.
