Medicine reaction

Simran

I am really freaking out here. A few days ago, I started taking this new medication that my doc prescribed for my anxiety, right? At first, it seemed fine, but then I noticed some weird stuff happening. Like, my heart started racing for no reason, and I felt super nauseous, which is just not normal for me. Then, I had this rash pop up on my arms, and I swear it’s gotten worse every day. I feel like I’m turning into a science experiment or something! I tried looking it up, and all these articles say you can have a medicine reaction but didn’t expect it to be like this. Has anyone else dealt with a medicine reaction like this?? I’m really trying to understand if it’s just normal side effects or if I should be worried. Should I stop taking it?? Seriously debating calling my doctor but worried they’ll just say it’s in my head. Ugh. Is there any point in toughing it out or should I really just stop the meds before it gets worse? I’m feeling so anxious about what’s happening and just want to feel better. Anyone have any advice on a possible medicine reaction?? Like, is there a timeline or something I should be looking for?

Doctors' responses

Based on what you’ve described, it seems like you may be experiencing a medication reaction that needs attention. Some of these symptoms—racing heart, nausea, and a rash—can be side effects of anxiety medications or could suggest an allergic reaction. It’s important to address these symptoms promptly, especially if the rash and other effects are worsening. First and foremost, do not stop taking any prescribed medication without consulting your doctor. Stopping anxiety medication abruptly can cause withdrawal symptoms or even worsen anxiety, so it’s essential to do this under medical guidance. While your current experience might be due to normal side effects, some symptoms, particularly a rash as part of a potential allergic reaction, can require immediate medical attention. I’d advise contacting your prescribing doctor as soon as possible to discuss the symptoms you’re experiencing. They might provide an alternative medication or adjust your current prescription to alleviate these reactions. Highlight that you have a rash and are uncomfortable with the physical symptoms, as these can sometimes indicate a more serious condition. If you can’t reach your doctor, consider going to an urgent care or emergency department, especially if the rash is spreading or becoming more severe, or if you have difficulty breathing or swelling, which requires immediate attention. In the meantime, avoid any over-the-counter remedies for the rash without professional advice, as they might complicate things. When discussing with your doctor, be specific about when the symptoms started, how they evolved, and any previous experiences with other medications, which will provide valuable context for their recommendations. It’s crucial to have these conversations to ensure your safety and well-being, and finding a medication regimen that more comfortably supports your anxiety management without these adverse reactions is absolutely possible.
