What tests should a male teenager do to check for urine incontinence after noticing drops of urine?

Client_b97aa8

I know a male teenager that wants to get 100 sure% if he has urine incontinence, cause it's obviously something irritating. What are the minimum things he can do to check if he has that issue or not? (e.g, urine examinations, etc.). He's just suspicious cause he found himself ≈3 times having a drop of urine on the tip of the penis after he had urinated 40-60min before. So, what he should do?? Please answer as soon as possible, cause it's something "blocking" him from living life normally.. Thank you for your support!

Doctors' responses

For a male teenager noticing occasional drops of urine post-voiding, the first step is to determine if this is a sign of urine incontinence or something less concerning like post-void dribbling, which is relatively common. Begin by suggesting that he keeps a bladder diary for a week. This involves tracking fluid intake, timing of urination, and leakage episodes to help discern patterns or triggers. If the diary suggests a persistent problem beyond post-void dribbling, a consultation with a healthcare professional is necessary. During this visit, a physical exam will be done to check the anatomical structure and rule out obstructions or other abnormalities. Urinalysis may be conducted to detect infections or other issues. If symptoms persist, a uroflowmetry might be recommended. This test measures the flow rate and volume of urination and can help identify blockages or functional issues. An ultrasound of the bladder may also be performed to assess retention and other structural concerns. However, if no significant patterns or abnormalities are found, it may simply be a case of post-micturition dribble, treatable by ensuring complete bladder emptying and by practicing the pelvic floor exercises. It’s important to consult a healthcare provider to interpret these findings accurately and rule out any underlying conditions that may require further intervention. If persistent, a referral to a urologist could be necessary for a more in-depth evaluation. Seeking timely professional medical advice ensures any serious concerns are promptly addressed, preventing unnecessary distress or complications.
