Doctors’ responses

Dr. Bharat Joshi
I’m a periodontist and academician with a strong clinical and teaching background. Over the last 4 years and 8 months, I’ve been actively involved in dental education, guiding students at multiple levels including dental hygienist, BDS, and MDS programs. Currently, I serve as a Reader at MMCDSR in Ambala, Haryana—a role that allows me to merge my academic passion with hands-on experience. Clinically, I’ve been practicing dentistry for the past 12 years. From routine procedures like scaling and root planing to more advanced cases involving grafts, biopsies, and implant surgeries. Honestly, I still find joy in doing a simple RCT when it’s needed. It’s not just about the procedure but making sure the patient feels comfortable and safe. Academically, I have 26 research publications to my credit. I’m on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dental Research and Journal of Dental Research and Oral Health, and I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing manuscripts—from case reports to meta-analyses and even book reviews. I was honored to receive the “Best Editor” award by Innovative Publications, and Athena Publications recognized me as an “excellent reviewer,” which honestly came as a bit of a surprise! In 2025, I had the opportunity to present a guest lecture in Italy on traumatic oral lesions. Sharing my work and learning from peers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Outside academics and clinics, I’ve also worked in the pharmaceutical sector as a Drug Safety Associate for about 3 years, focusing on pharmacovigilance. That role really sharpened my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of drug interactions and adverse effects. My goal is to keep learning, and give every patient and student my absolute best.

A situation where your menstrual periods are irregular or absent for three months could be due to several reasons, and evaluating these requires a comprehensive approach. It might not directly suggest pregnancy, especially since you bled after the intimate encounter. However, if there’s any doubt about pregnancy, it’s advisable to take a home pregnancy test since it’s a straightforward way to eliminate that concern. Besides pregnancy, one reason to consider is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition affecting hormone levels, leading to irregular periods. Other potential causes might include stress, significant weight changes, excessive exercise, or thyroid problems, all of which can affect your menstrual cycle. Lifestyle factors such as stress management and maintaining a balanced diet can help regulate your cycle, but these self-care steps won’t always solve the underlying problem. It’s important to consult with a healthcare provider who can take a complete medical history, perform a physical exam, and possibly order lab tests or imaging studies to identify the cause. Delayed periods sometimes signal a disruption in your hormonal balance—addressing that often requires medical intervention. Conditions like hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism may present with similar symptoms, so testing thyroid function could be informative. If you’re experiencing additional symptoms like unexplained weight gain or loss, excess hair growth, or severe acne, make sure to mention this to your doctor as they can provide valuable clues. Seeking a consultation ensures you get a personalized treatment plan based on accurate identification of the cause.
