Why does liver pain occur? - #12351

Advait

I am really worried because I’ve been having this weird pain in my upper right abdomen for a while now, and I can’t figure out what’s going on. I mean, it started off just feeling like discomfort, but now it’s like a sharp pain sometimes, especially after I eat fatty foods or unleash my stress eating habits (yikes!!). I also feel kinda nauseous at random times too, which is super annoying. I went to see my doc, and they mentioned it could be something to do with my liver, but honestly, I left the visit with more questions than answers. Why does liver pain occur?? They mentioned some tests, like an ultrasound – that sound serious, right? I read online about fatty liver and hepatitis, and now I’m freaking myself out because I think I may be at risk since I haven’t been the healthiest recently. I really don't understand why does liver pain occur? Could it be just my diet, or is my liver trying to tell me something more serious? I can’t get it out of my head, and it’s driving me insane. What do you all think about liver pain? How do you even know if it's something I should really worry about or just a phase? Any thoughts would super help!

Doctors’ responses

Liver pain, which typically presents as discomfort or sharp pain in the upper right abdomen, can be concerning, though it’s not always easy to pin down the precise cause without further investigation. Your symptoms — pain that worsens after eating fatty meals and associated nausea — suggest that it could be linked to liver or gallbladder issues. The liver doesn’t typically ‘hurt’ in the way other organs might because it doesn’t have pain fibers like skin or bones. When pain does occur, it often indicates stretching of the capsule around it or involvement of adjacent structures like the gallbladder. There are a number of reasons liver pain might occur and they primarily include fatty liver disease, hepatitis, or even liver congestion due to problems like heart failure or blockage of blood flow. Fatty liver disease, for instance, occurs when fat accumulates in liver cells, potentially due to poor diet, obesity, or high alcohol consumption. On the other hand, hepatitis involves inflammation of the liver, possibly triggered by a viral infection or toxin exposure.

The ultrasound your doctor mentioned is a non-invasive way to check the liver’s structure and look for signs of fatty liver, gallstones, or other abnormalities. Although it might sound serious, it’s quite a routine procedure commonly used to assess liver and abdominal issues more broadly. If you’re experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms, it’s crucial not to delay in getting this ultrasound and discussing its results with your physician, especially to rule out any serious conditions that might require prompt intervention. It’s always better to seek clarity sooner rather than later regarding liver health. In the meantime, consider moderating your intake of fatty foods and alcohol to see if that helps alleviate the discomfort — this can be beneficial not only for symptomatic relief but also to prevent further liver damage. However, lifestyle changes are best advised alongside professional guidance once you’ve had a proper diagnosis. Keep communicating openly with your healthcare provider as they’re best positioned to help you with a personalized plan based on the results of any tests conducted.
