home made green tea - #13468

Ira

I am feeling really confused about my health lately and maybe someone here has advice? I started drinking home made green tea like a month ago because I heard it was super healthy. I was trying to lose some weight and thought, “hey, green tea might help!” So I’ve been making my own at home, just boiling water and steeping the leaves. But weirdly, after a week or two, I started feeling a bit anxious and jittery like I drank too much coffee or something. I read that home made green tea can have a lot of caffeine, which I didn’t expect. My friend said maybe I was brewing it wrong or using too many leaves? I kinda thought I should be able to enjoy it without feeling all shaky. Also, I have this weird stomach feeling sometimes after drinking it, like nausea or just discomfort, ugh! Has anyone else experienced this with home made green tea? Is it possible that I’m drinking too much, or could it just be my body reacting to it? I mean, I did expect health benefits but not this rollercoaster! Any advice would be great, thanks!

Doctors’ responses

It sounds like you’re experiencing some common side effects of green tea, especially if you’re sensitive to caffeine or drinking it in large amounts. Green tea naturally contains caffeine, and if you’re brewing it strong or drinking multiple cups a day, that could definitely cause feelings of anxiety, jitteriness, or even insomnia, similar to what happens with coffee. You might want to try reducing the amount of tea leaves you’re using or steeping it for a shorter time to see if that helps. Typically, steeping for about 2-3 minutes should suffice, and using about 1 teaspoon of leaves per cup is standard. As for the stomach discomfort, some people find green tea can be a bit harsh if consumed on an empty stomach as it contains tannins which can increase stomach acid and lead to feelings of nausea or irritation. Try having it with a small snack to see if that helps ease your stomach. Also, spacing out your tea consumption throughout the day rather than drinking several cups at once might help mitigate these symptoms. Always listen to your body; if the symptoms persist, it might be worth it to consult with a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying issues. While green tea has many health benefits, like antioxidants promoting heart health and metabolism boosting, everyone’s reaction to it can differ, and moderation is often key.
