homemade remedy for loose motion - #14127

Karthik

I am really struggling with this loose motion, and it's been going on for a few days now. It started out of nowhere after I had some street food, which I thought was just a treat, but then bam! I was running to the bathroom every little while. It's crazy, even when I try to stick to bland foods like rice and bananas, nothing seems to help. I've heard people talk about their homemade remedy for loose motion, but I have no clue which ones work best or what to try! My cousin swears by some ginger tea she makes but I'm terrified to make anything else that could upset my stomach more. 😬 I did drink some oral rehydration solution, but sometimes I feel like it's not enough to keep me hydrated. Should I stick with certain foods or maybe try that ginger tea? What kinds of homemade remedy for loose motion have others found really effective? I'm just looking for something simple and potentially safe! Any tips would be appreciated, really hoping for this to pass soon. Thanks!

Doctors’ responses

A common cause of loose motions, like after street food, is usually infectious gastroenteritis, sometimes due to bacteria or viruses. Initial homemade remedies focus on rehydration and bland dietary choices. You’ve started with oral rehydration solutions (ORS), which is perfect to help prevent dehydration. Make sure you’re using an ORS that contains balanced electrolytes. Here’s a simple strategy: Prepare your own ORS by mixing 6 teaspoons of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of salt into 1 liter of clean water. Drink small amounts frequently, rather than large quantities all at once. Sticking to a diet of bland, low-fiber foods can help your digestion stabilize. Besides rice and bananas, try plain toast, boiled potatoes, or steamed carrots . Avoid dairy and fatty, fried, or spicy foods as they may aggravate symptoms. Ginger, as your cousin mentioned, has some anti-inflammatory properties. If you’d like to try ginger tea, steep a few slices of fresh ginger in hot water for a few minutes and sip it slowly. This may be soothing to your stomach. However, ginger isn’t a universal fix and doesn’t directly target the root cause of loose motions. If symptoms persist beyond a few days or there’s blood in your stool, fever, or severe abdominal pain, seeking medical attention promptly is critical. These can be signs of more serious conditions requiring specific medical treatment. While homemade remedies offer support, it’s vital to address potential underlying causes. Should symptoms worsen, a healthcare professional can guide proper testing and treatment.
