non stop loose motion - #17379

Rian

I am really freaking out right now because I’ve been dealing with this non stop loose motion for like three days straight! It all started after I had some street food that I probably shouldn’t have eaten, but you know how it is, right? Anyway, at first, I thought it was just a little upset stomach, but then it turned into this crazy situation where I literally can't go more than 15 mins without running to the bathroom. At its peak, I was feeling weak and dizzy! Ugh! I tried to drink plenty of fluids, but even then, the non stop loose motion just won’t quit! I did go to a doc who prescribed some medication, but it doesn’t seem to be helping yet! Should I be worried about dehydration from this non stop loose motion? Like, what can I do to stop this madness? I keep thinking it might be a bug or maybe my body's just reacting bad to whatever I ate. How long before I should consider this serious and seek further help? Nope, haven't seen blood or anything, but this has been a very annoying experience! Any advice would be super appreciated!

Doctors' responses

Non stop loose motions after eating street food can often stem from an infection like viral gastroenteritis or bacterial food poisoning. It’s good you haven’t seen blood– that would definitely be a red flag. Still, you’re right to be concerned about dehydration, especially given the frequency you mentioned. Staying hydrated is crucial. Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) are ideal since they replace electrolytes and fluids. Sip these frequently, even if the medication doesn’t seem to be kicking in right away. Keep an eye on symptoms like dry mouth, dark urine, or significant fatigue, which can indicate dehydration. If possible, continue with bland foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast—famously the BRAT diet—to give your gut a bit of a break. Probiotics might also help restore some normal gut flora, though with mixed success. Since you’ve mentioned weakness and dizziness, if they escalate or if you start seeing symptoms like prolonged abdominal pain, high fever, or blood in stools, seek medical attention urgently. Three days of non stop loose motion without improvement in symptoms could warrant a reevaluation by a healthcare provider. They might need to test a stool sample to rule out specific pathogens or adjust your treatment. Taking the med prescribed is important. If there’s no improvement soon, follow up with your doctor. It’s important to address this before it leads to more severe complications.
