what to eat before sex - #22300

Shaurya

I am feeling really confused about what to eat before sex. Last weekend, my partner and I decided to have a little romantic night, and I thought maybe if we had some good food beforehand, it would make everything more exciting. I ended up eating a big bowl of pasta because I wanted to feel full and satisfied, but then I was really sluggish and didn't have the energy I thought I'd have! It totally ruined the mood. Is there something better? Like, what to eat before sex that actually boosts energy or makes the experience more enjoyable? I’ve read that certain foods can help with blood circulation and arousal, but I don't wanna keep trying different stuff just to see if it works. Do any of you have actual favorites or maybe even some wisdom about what to eat before sex? I guess things like chocolates or fruits come to mind but would that really do anything? Or could it be something specific? Also, should I avoid heavy stuff altogether? Would love to hear what’s worked for you all. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

When it comes to choosing what to eat before sex, keeping it light and strategic can definitely make a difference. For one, heavy meals like a large bowl of pasta can leave you feeling sluggish because they’re energy-consuming to digest—it’s the opposite of what you want. Opting for foods that boost energy and enhance blood flow could improve arousal and endurance. Foods rich in antioxidants, like berries, dark chocolate, and leafy greens, can be a good choice because they promote healthy blood circulation, which is essential for arousal.

Nuts and seeds, especially almonds and walnuts, are high in L-arginine, an amino acid that can enhance blood flow and potentially improve sexual function. They also provide a quick energy boost. Oysters are often touted for their aphrodisiac properties because they’re rich in zinc, an important mineral that supports testosterone production, a hormone involved in sexual arousal for both men and women.

You might consider including dark chocolate; it contains flavonoids, which can improve circulation, and the small amount of caffeine it contains can increase alertness. Fresh fruits like bananas and avocados are not only easy to digest but packed with B vitamins and potassium, which are essential for energy production.

While certain foods might enhance the experience, it’s equally important to stay hydrated. Proper hydration is crucial, as dehydration can lead to fatigue, diminishing sexual performance. Of course, caffeine-based drinks may provide an energy quick-fix, but too much caffeine can have the opposite effect, causing nervousness or jitteriness, so moderation is key.

In short, a small, balanced meal with a focus on foods that enhance circulation and energy is ideal, and try to keep it moderate in portion size. Avoid completely skipping a meal, though, as low blood sugar can make you feel weak. If you’re looking for something immediate and simple, a handful of nuts followed by a few pieces of dark chocolate might just hit the spot.
