My period is delayed and UPT test is negative - #22363

Nandini

ठीक है 🤍 मैं लगभग 200 words में आपकी problem ऐसे लिख रही हूँ कि आप इसे doctor को भेज सकें, और शुरुआत में miscarriage का ज़िक्र नहीं होगा। आप इसे copy–pas > Hello Doctor, Main aapse period delay ke issue ke liye consult karna chahti hoon. Mera last period 23 December ko aaya tha. Uske baad se abhi tak period nahi aaya hai. Usually mera menstrual cycle regular rehta hai aur pehle aisa zyada delay nahi hota tha. Maine home pregnancy test kiya hai aur result negative aaya hai. Phir bhi period delay hone ki wajah se mujhe kaafi tension ho rahi hai. Is dauran mujhe kabhi-kabhi lower abdomen me heaviness, thodi discomfort aur weakness feel hoti hai, lekin severe pain ya abnormal discharge nahi hai. Pichhle kuch hafton se main kaafi stress me bhi rahi hoon, jiska shayad hormones par asar pada ho. Lifestyle me bhi thoda disturbance raha hai. Main yeh samajhna chahti hoon ki period delay ka exact reason kya ho sakta hai aur iske liye kaunsa safe treatment ya investigation zaroori hoga.

Doctors' responses

Dr. Bharat Joshi
I’m a periodontist and academician with a strong clinical and teaching background. Over the last 4 years and 8 months, I’ve been actively involved in dental education, guiding students at multiple levels including dental hygienist, BDS, and MDS programs. Currently, I serve as a Reader at MMCDSR in Ambala, Haryana—a role that allows me to merge my academic passion with hands-on experience. Clinically, I’ve been practicing dentistry for the past 12 years. From routine procedures like scaling and root planing to more advanced cases involving grafts, biopsies, and implant surgeries. Honestly, I still find joy in doing a simple RCT when it’s needed. It’s not just about the procedure but making sure the patient feels comfortable and safe. Academically, I have 26 research publications to my credit. I’m on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dental Research and Journal of Dental Research and Oral Health, and I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing manuscripts—from case reports to meta-analyses and even book reviews. I was honored to receive the “Best Editor” award by Innovative Publications, and Athena Publications recognized me as an “excellent reviewer,” which honestly came as a bit of a surprise! In 2025, I had the opportunity to present a guest lecture in Italy on traumatic oral lesions. Sharing my work and learning from peers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Outside academics and clinics, I’ve also worked in the pharmaceutical sector as a Drug Safety Associate for about 3 years, focusing on pharmacovigilance. That role really sharpened my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of drug interactions and adverse effects. My goal is to keep learning, and give every patient and student my absolute best.

Delayed periods with a negative urine pregnancy test (UPT) can indeed be concerning, but there are several potential explanations worth considering. Stress is a known factor that can disrupt the menstrual cycle as it can interfere with the hormones that regulate your periods. This might be especially relevant if you’ve noted recent lifestyle disturbances or increased stress levels. Hormonal imbalances, such as those involving thyroid function or conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can also cause menstrual irregularities. Other common causes might include sudden weight changes, excessive exercise, or fluctuations due to contraceptive use. Occasionally, certain medications can also contribute to delayed periods. It’s essential to stay observant about any other symptoms you might be experiencing. Since you’ve mentioned heaviness in the lower abdomen and weakness, it might be beneficial to keep track of these to provide your doctor with a comprehensive picture. Additionally, consider tracking your menstrual cycle more closely with specific apps or a journal, noting symptoms, emotional changes, and lifestyle factors. It’s a good idea to consult your doctor if the delay continues, especially if it surpasses 90 days, or if any new symptoms arise. They can perform a clinical evaluation that might include blood tests to examine hormone levels, or an ultrasound to rule out any underlying issues. This will help determine any necessary courses of treatment or further investigations. If immediate medical consultation isn’t yet possible, maintaining a balanced diet, managing stress through techniques like meditation or yoga, and ensuring adequate rest could be beneficial in potentially regulating your cycle naturally.
