can we drink sugarcane juice in fast - #22999

Ishita

I am feeling really confused about my fasting routine. Lately I've been trying to do intermittent fasting to get healthier or something, you know? But the other day, my friend brought over fresh sugarcane juice, which is super sweet and refreshing, and I just can't figure out if it fits into this fasting thing. I mean, can we drink sugarcane juice in fast or does it totally ruin the whole point of fasting? I tried to research but got lost in all sorts of articles and opinions. Some say the sugar in it would break the fast while others think it’s natural and maybe okay? I was planning to fast all day but then I was like, if sugarcane juice has vitamins and stuff, wouldn’t that mean it’s nutritional and could be good during fasting? I don't want to mess up my metabolism or anything like that, ya know? My fasting goal is like to feel lighter and more energetic, not sluggish or heavy! Anyway, what do you guys think? Should I just avoid sugarcane juice in fast completely, or can I sip some without feeling guilty about ruining my efforts? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Doctors' responses

When it comes to drinking sugarcane juice during intermittent fasting, it’s important to understand what fasting entails regarding metabolic states. During the fasting period, your body’s aim is to avoid calorie intake to maintain an environment that promotes fat burning over storing. Sugarcane juice, despite its natural origin, contains a high amount of natural sugars which can provide a quick source of calories. Consuming sugarcane juice will indeed break a fast because the introduction of calories, particularly from sugars, prompts insulin response and halts the metabolic state associated with fasting. This is counterproductive to the fasting goals of maintaining a low-insulin metabolic state, optimizing fat metabolism, and possibly promoting other biological processes associated with fasting such as autophagy. Even though sugarcane juice does contain vitamins and minerals, the primary concern during fasting is the caloric content and the consequent metabolic changes rather than the nutritional benefits alone. To maximize the benefits of your fasting routine while feeling lighter and more energetic, aim to consume zero-calorie beverages such as water, black coffee, or plain tea during fasting windows. If you wish to incorporate sugarcane juice into your diet, consider doing so during a designated eating period rather than during the fast. This approach allows you to enjoy the refreshment and potential nutritional benefits without disrupting the physiological state promoted by fasting.
