can we apply oil after hair serum - #23752
I am really confused about my hair care routine lately, and I hope someone here can help me out. I’ve been using a hair serum for a couple of weeks now, and honestly, I’ve seen some improvement in shine and frizz control, but I heard mixed things about using oil afterward. Like, can we apply oil after hair serum? I mean, I’m worried that putting oil on top might just clog everything up or weigh my hair down. My hair is super fine and gets greasy like, really quick if I’m not careful. Last week, I tried applying a little argan oil after serum, and it felt okay at first, but then my hair looked a bit flat by the end of the day. Ugh, I dunno! I’ve tried different serums too, even ones for hydration and repairing damages, but I'm still unsure if oil is a good idea in my case. Can we apply oil after hair serum without messing things up? Is it best to wait a bit after the serum or just use one or the other? I’d really love to know your thoughts! Thanks in advance!

Doctors' responses
Applying hair oil after serum can be done, but it’s essential to understand the role of each product in your hair care routine and how they might interact, especially for fine hair that’s prone to greasiness. Hair serums are typically silicone or water-based, designed to coat the hair, reduce frizz, and add shine without penetrating deeply into the hair. They tend to be lightweight, making them suitable for fine hair as you’ve already found some success with shine and frizz control. Oils, meanwhile, tend to be heavier and can provide added benefit by moisturizing the hair shaft and scalp, especially beneficial for dry or damaged hair types. For super fine and quickly-greasing hair like yours, be cautious with oil use. Applying oil over serum could indeed weigh your hair down or lead to greasiness, particularly if the oil isn’t well-tailored to your hair’s texture or used in excess. When layering products, consider - less is more. Begin with a small amount of serum, focus on the mid-lengths through the ends. If using oil, choose something lightweight like argan or jojoba oil, applying sparingly and avoiding the roots. Sometimes blending a drop of oil in your hands with the serum, before applying can prevent overuse. Allow the serum to set for a few minutes, so it creates a slight barrier, then apply the oil gently where additional moisture is needed. Experiment with intervals and quantities — everyone’s hair responds differently. If the combination is too heavy, it might work better to alternate the days you use them or choose one product, to keep it simple. Remember, adjustments in technique or product might be required if your hair’s needs change with the seasons or styling routines.
